Travel to Tanzania
There are 3 possible airports that you may use – depending on what is easier and more affordable to you.
We highly recommend flying into Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA). KIA is only an hours’ drive from Arusha town. We can arrange airport pick up or departure transfers for only US$ 60 per trip sharing if the guests are 2 to 4 people but price will change if the number of clients increase.
Arusha Airport, located within Arusha is closer than KIA; however, there are very few flights that land there as it is an extremely small airport. Arusha Airport can be used if you are flying in from a neighboring country or from within Tanzania.
Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is located in Kenya. It is approximately 5 hours drive away from Arusha. Flights landing in Kenya are usually cheaper however 5 hours on a bus is not ideal. The shuttle from Nairobi to Arusha costs approximately USD$ 35.
Passports and visas are required for entry. The passport must be valid for 6 months after the intended length of stay. Visas can be obtained prior to departure or at your point of entry into Tanzania. The visa cost is approximately $50 for most.
There are various recommended vaccinations for travel into Tanzania. However, there are no required vaccinations.
We recommend the following vaccinations and medications:
- Yellow Fever
- Hepatitis A,
- Hepatitis B,
- measles/mumps/rubella (MMR),
- diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus (DPT)
In Tanzania we use the Tanzanian Shilling (Tsh.) however US Dollars are accepted almost everywhere in Tanzania. Please note that your US dollars must be dated at least 2006 or newer. Many merchants will not accept US cash that is older than 2006.
There are some ATMS in Arusha, however there aren’t many, it is safest not to rely on them. We suggest that you bring all the cash that you think you may need.
There are very few places that take credit cards. Large hotels and restaurants will often take credit cards but will impose a fee of up to 5% for using a credit card.
