Lake Nakuru National Park

Lake Nakuru National park, Hyrax hill prehistoric site amongst others. Nakuru is home to millions of flamingos that create a magnificent pink rim around the lake. The park offers a sanctuary for the region’s hundreds of wildlife and plain species. There are over 400 species of birds. You will also find giraffes, rhinos, lions, cheetahs, leopards, waterbucks and snakes. Lookout points such as the Baboon Cliff and Lion Hills offer a great view of the birds, the lake and mammals including warthogs and baboons.

Hyrax hill prehistoric site was gazetted as a national monument in 1943 and opened to the public in 1965. The hill was named after hyraxes found in abundance, living in cracks within rocks found in this area. The museum atop a hill was once a colonial farmhouse. Ancient dwellings of the Sirikwa people now extinct are found in-situ the oldest dating to 3,000 years and the youngest to possibly 300 years. The museum displays ethnographic materials of the people in the Rift Valley, archaeology and local ecology. The nature trail is a must-do for an aerial view of Lake Nakuru and the town.
